Grind (2003)
Saying that Grind is the best “big” skateboarding movie isn’t really saying much. Thrashin’ (1986) wasn’t exactly a critical darling and 1989’s Gleaming the Cube was so bad that my mom went to sleep in the theater. Grind combines the best of each of those movies (hot blonde, pro skater cameos, goofy sidekick) with something resembling a real movie and the outcome isn’t that bad.
There were a few too many scenes that were either straight-up stolen or, at best, were too clumsy of an homage. There were a few too many characters that were too damn annoying and cliché. There was the requisite “holy grail” and the legendary superstar pro skater (it seemed like maybe he was supposed to be a Tony Hawk character, but Tony’s not a dick), some pretty good skating and some nice scenery. Of course it’s a little dumb but that is to be expected. If you wanted a real skateboard movie, you’d watch Animal Chin for the 23,927th time. Especially after seeing the pool at the Pink Motel and Tom Green (overacting) as a stoned DJ skateshop worker at the Animal Chin Skateshop in Grind.
