Wired Interviews Wilco: ‘Music Is Not a Loaf of Bread’
It isn’t hard to prove the RIAA wrong when they complain that p2p downloads are hurting the music industry; all you have to do is test the theory. Wilco did. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was streaming on the web before it became their best selling CD and gained $15,000 for Doctors Without Borders in unsolicited ‘thank you’ money from fans who downloaded the music for free via p2p. Their latest CD, the beautiful A Ghost Is Born is further proof that downloads didn’t hurt their sales: it hit number 8 on the Billboard charts.
Stop trying to treat music like it’s a tennis shoe, something to be branded. If the music industry wants to save money, they should take a look at some of their six-figure executive expense accounts. All those lawsuits can’t be cheap, either.
