366 Project 2012 : January Highlights

I have always admired people who attemp 365 Projects (or 366 Project for leap years like 2012), regardless of the type of project. I especially admire those who attempt photography 365 projects because I’ve never managed to get beyond day 2 during my attempts. I usually decide to do it and then don’t, results in 0 days complete. This year, for whatever reasons, I shattered my 2-day record. Today is St Groundhog’s Day and I’ve managed to take at least 1 photo per day every since January 1, 2012. I also have a bit of a side project (an inside project? a subproject?) going: 1 portrait a week, 52 weeks a year (and yes, I am posting those on 52WAY.com). Thanks to a short rant by the king of twitter photography rants, John Ricard, I decided around January 4th to only use my real camera, no iPhone photos. That didn’t work out but I am trying to stick to that rule as often as possible. I am also trying to avoid photos of my socks, my dinner, and other easy/lame subject but I haven’t been able to completely adhere to that rule either.

My predictions for 366 Project 2012:
I think I will finish the project, taking and uploading at least 1 photo per day for 366 straight days.
I think I will capture at least 52 portraits, at least 1 per week.
I think November and December’s photos will be better than January and February.
I think I will have 30+ self-portraits.
I think I will have 100+ photos of my wife.
I think I will have less than 50 iPhone photos.
I think some of the photos will be terrible and some will be worthless, regardless of the camera used.
I think I will love at least 1 of the photos per month.
I think you will love at least 1 of the photos per year.

CAST ‘Jack Goes Boating’ Photos

Carolina Actors Studio Theater (CAST) is a little over halfway through their run of Jack Goes Boating. I did some promotional photos for them

and took some photos during the first half of a dress rehearsal

but the fun part was a trip to a local pool. Michael Simmons took the actors to the pool so they could get a feel for some of the scenes they would be portraying on dry land (with the help of some great lighting and sound work). He asked if I wanted to take some underwater photos… how could I say no to that? I grabbed an underwater pack for my camera and joined them.

Unlike the first CAST play I attended, Jack Goes Boating does not include a pool on stage. This day of underwater practice was just a little homework for the actors.
I finally saw a full performance Jack Goes Boating last Friday. I would recommend it if you want some funny, quirky, character-driven romantic entertainment with a healthy side of sex, drugs, and ~~rock n roll~~ reggae.

June 24, 2007 : The Night Fat City Fell

Click the pic above to see my photos from June 24, 2007, the night a storm blew down the front wall of Fat City. By then, that wall was all that was left of the Fat City Deli. The rest had been demolished and the site was waiting for new construction to begin. That new construction was to be built around the big yellow Fat City Deli wall but nature had other plans.

There is a car under that rubble. The bricks were kept and used to rebuild that front wall for part of what is now the Fat City Condos building which includes condos and a bank. A bank at Fat City… who ever would have guessed that in 1999?

Outer Banks Photos – September, 2010

Marisa and I took a long weekend to visit the Outer Banks last week. We did a little tourist sight-seeing and a little beach lounging. I took some a few photos while there, mostly with a rented 20mm f/2.8 lens.

There are only 10 photos in the set. I would have taken more but I am afraid to take my camera onto the beach. Click any of the links above to see the rest.

Matt And Sadie Engagement Photos

I was honored when asked to be in my oldest friend’s wedding. When I was also asked to take their engagement photos, I was honored and a little worried. I really didn’t want to mess up my friends’ photos. I ended up having a pretty easy time of it. they did all the hard work; I just pushed the button on the camera. The results weren’t bad at all, in my opinion. I’m waiting to hear what their parents think, those are the opinions that matter

Babyshaker Record Release Part at the Milestone April 10, 2010

Babyshaker finally released a new album! They threw their record release party at the Milestone and made it through almost an entire set before Scott finally gave up on singing through his migraine. I almost never get headaches so I can’t imagine standing on that stage with the lights, music, and yelling and managing to belt out 7 songs with a raging migraine. That’s real rock n’ roll, kids!

The record is great. There are songs I’ve heard and loved live and some I don’t think I’ve heard before. The production is raw but sharp, very full without losing the live feel. Hopefully they don’t wait another 9 years before they release their next one.

Iron Cordoba’s St Paddy’s Day Irish Party Photos 2010-03-13

Iron Cordoba’s Fighting Irish party was at a real gym this year: The Ultimate Gym in NoDa. They had to do quite a bit of work to get a stage, lights, sound system, and bar set up but it was nice to see a party/performance in a not only a different venue but a different type of venue. Hopefully we’ll see more of this in the future.

Eric Parks told me about his grandparents’ beach house a few months ago and I immediately wanted to schedule a trip to take photos there. It took a while before we got a group together with the right props but we were finally able to spend a few days on Oak Island and get some pics while there.
